Real Madrid, in recent days, have faced a major setback in their pursuit of top defensive target Alphonso Davies.
The reigning European champions were looking to sign the Canadian international on a free transfer next summer. But after much speculation, it appears Davies is inching closer to renewing his deal with Bayern Munich.
A recent report from Fabrizio Romano has offered a crucial update on the future of Davies, as he moves closer to prolonging his stay in Bavaria.
As per the Italian transfer expert, it appears Bayern Munich are looking to seal the renewal of Davies this week.
This comes on the back of Friday’s meeting between the two parties, where big progress was made in regards to negotiations over a new deal.

It seems Davies’ entourage is satisfied with that Bayern are now offering, thereby ruling out any prospect of the player joining Real Madrid on a free transfer.
The job is not yet done, though. Romano adds that a final round of talk is expected to happen between these two parties, where they will presumably dole out the final details of the new contract.
With Davies not an option anymore, Real Madrid must make an important decision, as far as their search for a new left-back is concerned.
The Spanish giants must either wait for another market opportunity to sign someone like Davies on a cut-price deal or go big after another top left-back in the market.
Should they choose the latter, Real Madrid must also make a decision between Fran Garcia and Miguel Gutierrez.
Despite his recent improvement Garcia has not been able to consistently produce his best since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, which has tempted Real Madrid to consider re-signing Gutierrez, another youth player who is doing well at Girona.
In any case, it appears Ferland Mendy is here to stay – acting as an insurance option for Los Blancos.
