In addition to commenting on the rise of 17-year-old Bayern Munich phenom Lennart Karl, German footballing icon Uli Hoeneß had some interesting words of praise for FCB striker Harry Kane whilst speaking at a Thursday club charity event. Hoeneß declared himself fully satisfied with the record breaking run of his beloved Bayern, something few thought possible when the Bundesliga record champions entered the start of competitive play with an extremely small squad.

This is the ideal situation for FC Bayern,” Hoeneß said. “We are extremely pleased with what we are seeing. I recently told [head coach] Vincent Kompany at a dinner meeting ‘In the past, you used to hope in the 80th minute that the game would soon be over. And now, in the 80th minute, you say to yourself: I hope they keep playing for a long time because it’s so much fun’

We’ve put together a great team without spending a ton of money,” Hoeneß continued. “The fact that we didn’t spend another 50 million here, 60 million there, but instead put our faith in Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof, has been good for our coffers. We have the fact that we have a coach [in Kompany] ready to integrate young players to thank for that.”

When it came to the club’s most notorious and prolific veteran attacker, Hoeneß (in true Hoeneß style) delivered something of a backhanded compliment. In the 73-year-old’s opinion at least, the 32-year-old England national team captain refined his game some time after joining the mighty German giants.

We’ve had some great players in the past, such as Gerd Müller, Giovane Elber, and Robert Lewandowski,” Hoeneß said. “But Harry Kane is absolutely on par with them, though Gerd was also a World Cup winner and won an incredible number of titles. But what Harry Kane is producing here is top notch.

What I like best about him is that in the beginning, he was a striker who waited in the box for the ball to come to him,” Hoeneß continued. “But today, he’s long since become a playmaker, a finisher and, above all, a player with a personality that inspires the others on the pitch.
