Bayern Munich and Augsburg go head-to-head in a Bavarian derby at the Allianz Arena on Saturday.
The hosts are looking to extend a dominant, unbeaten Bundesliga run and tighten their grip on top spot, while the visitors battle to stay clear of the relegation play-off places.
Vincent Kompany approaches Matchday 19 with a severely depleted defence. Ankle and calf injuries rule out Josip Stanišić and Konrad Laimer, respectively. Furthermore, a squad-wide virus has sidelined Dayot Upamecano and Sacha Boey. This leaves Bayern critically short of natural full-backs and central defensive options.
Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed Upamecano’s absence due to the illness circulating within the camp. Consequently, Kompany will likely pair Jonathan Tah with Kim Min-jae in the heart of the defence. German reports indicate that Serge Gnabry and youngster Lennart Karl also remain major doubts. Both players missed Friday’s training and face late fitness tests.
Conversely, Nicolas Jackson provides a timely boost. The forward returned to full training on Friday, fresh from winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. He offers Kompany an immediate option in attack, either from the start or off the bench.
Augsburg’s defensive resources are also depleted, with captain Jeffrey Gouweleeuw (knee) and fellow centre-back Chrislain Matsima (thigh) both sidelined for the trip to Munich. Additionally, Noahkai Banks is suspended.
Midfielder Kristijan Jakić is listed as a doubt with a calf problem and faces a late fitness test, potentially forcing Baum to reshuffle his central midfield yet again.
Bayern are enjoying a record-breaking Bundesliga campaign, sitting at the top with 16 wins, two draws, and no defeats from 18 league games, having scored 71 goals and conceded just 14. In 2026 alone, Bayern won all four of their competitive fixtures by an aggregate score of 18–3, including a 5–1 demolition of RB Leipzig away and a 2–0 Champions League victory over Union Saint-Gilloise in midweek thanks to a Harry Kane brace.
Augsburg, by contrast, sit 15th in the table with four wins, four draws and ten defeats from 18 games, leaving them just three points above the relegation play-off spot. They have started 2026 with a heavy 4–0 defeat away to Borussia Mönchengladbach followed by home draws against Union Berlin (1–1) and Freiburg (2–2), extending their winless run to five Bundesliga matches.
