Bayern Munich and Chelsea meet in the UEFA Champions League this evening.

It’s a rematch of the famous 2012 final between the teams, though that’s not the only memorable contest between the German and English powerhouses.

Ahead of their Allianz Arena showdown, we’ve remembered five past clashes between Bayern and Chelsea.

Chelsea 4-2 Bayern Munich (6th April 2005, Champions League)

Jose Mourinho’s side took a huge step towards the Champions League semi-finals after a thrilling first-leg win over Bayern Munich at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea led inside four minutes through Joe Cole’s deflected effort, but Bayern levelled early in the second half via Bastian Schweinsteiger.

Frank Lampard then took centre stage, putting Chelsea back in front before a superb second, swivelling to fire home on the half-volley. Didier Drogba made it four for the home side, before Michael Ballack brought Bayern back into the tie with a late penalty.

Bayern Munich 3-2 Chelsea (12th April 2005, Champions League)

Chelsea completed their quarter-final win in the return, despite defeat in Munich and the absence of Jose Mourinho.

Frank Lampard opened the scoring to put Chelsea in a commanding position in the tie, but Claudio Pizzaro struck for Bayern to level on the night. Didier Drogba’s terrific header put the contest beyond doubt and assured Chelsea’s place in the last four.

Paolo Guerrero and Mehmet Scholl issued a response for Bayern, who won the battle but lost the war.

Bayern Munich 1-1 Chelsea (19th May 2012, Champions League)

Arguably the greatest night in Chelsea’s history. The West Londoners had upset the odds to reach the Champions League final under interim manager Roberto Di Matteo, where a formidable Bayern Munich team awaited.

The clash was played at Bayern’s Allianz Arena stadium, offering the German giants the chance to win the Champions League on home soil.

Bayern dominated the contest and Thomas Mueller’s late header looked to have sealed success for the Bavarians. However, Didier Drogba forced extra time with a bullet header in the final moments.

In extra-time, Petr Cech saved Arjen Robben’s penalty, before the Czech shot-stopper saved a spot-kick from Ivica Olic in the resulting shootout. After Bastian Schweinsteiger hit the post, Drogba kept his cool to crown Chelsea champions of Europe for the first time.

Bayern Munich 2-2 Chelsea (30th August 2013, UEFA Super Cup)

Chelsea were on the wrong end of a penalty shootout in 2013, as the Blues were beaten in the UEFA Super Cup final.

The West Londoners twice led in the contest, with Fernando Torres firing the Europa League holders ahead. Franck Ribery’s goal levelled and Bayern appeared in control after Ramires was sent off for Chelsea on 85 minutes.

In extra time, Eden Hazard restored 10-man Chelsea’s lead, only for Javi Martinez to scramble Bayern level again and force penalties. Romelu Lukaku missed the decisive kick for Chelsea as Bayern claimed the trophy.

“The best team clearly lost,” Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claimed. “They just scored one more penalty.”

Chelsea 0-3 Bayern Munich (25th February 2020, Champions League)

Clashes between the teams have traditionally been close but Bayern breezed past an ordinary Chelsea in the 2019/20 season.

Ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry marked his return to London with two goals at Stamford Bridge, with Robert Lewandowski adding another goal in a comfortable win.

The jet-heeled Alphonso Davies caused problems for Chelsea all evening, as the home side were distinctly second-best. In the return, Bayern racked up another emphatic win to progress 7-1 on aggregate.
