Bayern Munich defender Dayot Upamecano (27) has reached a verbal agreement to join Real Madrid, according to a report from Foot Mercato.
Real Madrid are in the market for defensive reinforcements, but like in recent seasons, they are looking to avoid shelling out on a transfer fee. Kylian Mbappé and Trent Alexander-Arnold have both joined on free transfers in recent summers, and the trend of a high-profile player arriving on a free now looks set to continue.
For a long time, Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté (26) was the priority, but their focus is now on signing Upamecano, whose contract with Bayern Munich is up this summer. The Frenchman has already verbally agreed to join Los Blancos next summer, Foot Mercato understands.
Upamecano isn’t short of options. As well as the interest from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain are also admirers of the centre-back, whilst, as confirmed by Max Eberl, Bayern Munich are doing their utmost to retain the player.
