FC Bayern are on the verge of reaching the next stage of their Champions League campaign. A home win against Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday evening could see them secure an early place in the last 16. And yet there is an unusual aspect to the clash – one that has less to do with Bayern’s current form and more to do with head coach Vincent Kompany’s personal past

Kompany is no stranger to Union Saint-Gilloise. During his time as coach at RSC Anderlecht, the current Bayern coach crossed paths with the Belgian top club five times – with sobering results. Kompany won just one match and lost four times, a record that on paper certainly bears the label „fearful opponent“

When asked about these statistics, however, the 39-year-old was demonstratively calm. „You can’t mix everything up, it was a different time. Now it’s a different situation,“ explained Kompany at the final press conference before today’s game. At the same time, he let it be known that his appreciation for Union Saint-Gilloise is nothing new. He had recognised early on „that they do a very good job“ and would soon be playing for titles in Belgium. Respect yes – nervousness no. Bayern with home power – Union with away courage

In sporting terms, the roles are clearly divided going into this match. FC Bayern arrive with a broad chest from the Bundesliga, where they recently made two real statements with the 8:1 win over Wolfsburg and the 5:1 win in Leipzig. The team looks stable, confident and almost unstoppable in attack. Another factor clearly speaks in favour of Munich: their impressive home streak in the Champions League. FCB have been unbeaten in the group or league phase at the Allianz Arena for 32 matches, 30 of which have even been won. The last home defeat dates back to April 2021, when Paris Saint-Germain triumphed 3:2 in the quarter-finals

But Union Saint-Gilloise will not travel to Munich without arguments. Although the Belgians are currently only 30th in the CL table, they still have a good chance of making the play-offs. Their strength on the road is striking. Union have won both of their games away from home this Champions League season – at PSV Eindhoven (3-1) and at Galatasaray Istanbul (1-0). A point in Munich would be hugely significant for the team from Brussels and would open the door to the next round wide open

For Vincent Kompany and FC Bayern, this means full concentration, despite being favourites. The coach is aware of the qualities of his opponents and their ability to feel comfortable in the underdog role. At the same time, the starting position for Munich is clear. Anything other than a home win would be a surprise – both statistically and in sporting terms

Tonight will show whether Kompany can finally put his personal negative streak behind him against Union Saint-Gilloise. The stage is set, the round of 16 is within reach. For FC Bayern, it’s about the next logical step – and perhaps also about a small, personal blip in the statistics for their coach.
