Bayern Munich are set to miss out on Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola, who is likely to join Liverpool this summer.
Liverpool spent over £100m each on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak last summer, and they could be prepared to pay a similar fee to sign Barcola.
It has been widely reported that PSG are holding out for a fee in the region of £145m, but Liverpool remain confident of reaching an agreement for the highly-rated winger.
The Bavarian giants have closely monitored Barcola over the past 15 months, with club officials maintaining contact with the player’s representatives.
He has been one of the names on Bayern’s shortlist, and the club even approached the Frenchman to assess his situation.
Barcola wants to leave PSG and is understood to be excited by the prospect of moving to Anfield.
Christian Falk has told CFBayern Insider that Barcola would be Bayern’s first-choice replacement for Michael Olise if the Frenchman leaves the club.
However, with Liverpool pushing hard to complete the deal, Bayern have virtually no chance of signing Barcola this summer.
Falk said: “Bayern Munich are following this potential transfer of Bradley Barcola to Liverpool. Last summer, and the summer before, they were always in contact with the Frenchman’s management.
“The 23-year-old is a player on the shortlist, and even this summer they knocked on Barcola’s door to check his situation and what his feelings were for the future, as his current contract runs out in 2028. There are no negotiations with PSG, at the moment, for a contract extension, so he’s getting cheaper and cheaper every year.
“The left-sided winger is too expensive this summer for Bayern Munich, but it’s a pity that he’s not too expensive for Liverpool right now! They are closer to this deal. Yan Diomande, it seems, will be signing for Real Madrid, so Liverpool really need a player like Barcola now. Bayern, on the other hand, could use a player like this in the future.
“We don’t know what’s happening with Michael Olise long-term. This summer, of course, we know he’s staying put, but next summer the big question will be whether Olise signs a new contract or if Bayern will be forced to sell him.
“The number one option to replace Michael Olise would be, as far as Bayern Munich are concerned, Bradley Barcola. If Liverpool are there, however, and if he’s signing for the Reds, there’s no chance for Bayern. But next summer, there could be a chance if he’s staying in Paris for another season.”
Real Madrid are close to signing Yan Diomande, meaning they are unlikely to pursue Michael Olise any further this summer.
In any case, Bayern would have rejected any approach from Madrid, having made it crystal clear that Olise is not for sale.
However, Olise’s situation could change next summer if he does not sign a new contract with the German champions.
Barcola, who is capable of playing on either wing, would have been an excellent addition for Bayern, but Liverpool now appear ready to break the bank once again to secure his signature.
For now, Barcola is out of Bayern’s reach, but if he remains at PSG for another season, there could still be an opportunity for Bayern to revisit their interest next summer.
