Lennart Karl was injured during training with the German national team shortly before the start of the World Cup, causing him to miss the tournament and parts of the preparation phase. He has now spoken in more detail about his comeback plan.

It was a shock, both for him and for the DFB. Karl was seen as a rising star, a young, carefree player who was expected to bring that youthful ease to the World Cup.

The diagnosis of a torn muscle fiber hit both Karl himself and the national team coach, as well as the entire team, hard. He will have to take a longer break. Exactly how long depends in part on the healing process.

Karl explains his comeback plan

Especially with muscle injuries, it’s not uncommon for everything to be pushed back by a week or two. Karl himself wants to be patient, but of course he still wants to be back on the field as soon as possible.

If all goes well, he could rejoin training in full during the preseason and would at least not miss any competitive matches for Bayern. In an interview with BILD, he explained how the process leading up to his comeback will unfold.

“I’m still in Munich this week for initial treatment, and after that I’ve been given some time off,” says Karl. “In these first few days, there isn’t much I can do in rehab except give the injury time to heal. After that, the rehabilitation phase will begin again at some point.”

In other words: It’s still too early to say with certainty when Karl will be able to resume intensive training. The timing of his return to training will then also determine when he can play again.

Julian Nagelsmann, the national team coach, said after the diagnosis that the attacking player is likely to be out for around four to six weeks, although four weeks was already a very optimistic estimate.

Bayern will play their first competitive match in the Super Cup against RB Leipzig on August 22. At least in that regard, the odds shouldn’t be too bad.
