When FC Bayern meet Real Madrid, it’s far more than just a Champions League quarter-final. It’s the most traditional clash in the top flight, a meeting of two European heavyweights that has made for special evenings for decades. Once again, small things are likely to make the difference – and above all very specific direct duels on the pitch

This will be the 29th time that the German record champions and the Whites have met on the international stage, and this figure alone underlines the power of this clash in European soccer. Both teams have enormous individual quality, both teams have players in their ranks who can single-handedly decide games at the highest level. And that is precisely why the focus ahead of the first leg at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is on those direct duels that could ultimately be the deciding factor

Bayern’s full-backs face their biggest test

Bayern’s biggest challenge will probably be on the flanks, where Real Madrid have two players in Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior who are a constant threat at the top level. Not only are both extremely quick, but they often only need a brief moment to completely change a game

The duel will be particularly exciting on Bayern’s right-hand side of defence, where Josip Stanisic is likely to be challenged above all against Vinícius Júnior. The Brazilian has been one of the most dangerous one-on-one players in the world for years and comes over his side with a lot of power. This task is all the more delicate for Stanisic because he was recently challenged directly against Vinícius in the international match between Croatia and Brazil. On that occasion, the Bayern professional did not have an easy evening and felt the enormous dynamism of the Real star on several occasions

This will show how well Bayern defend as a team, because one thing is clear: Vinícius can hardly be completely taken out of the game for 90 minutes. Stanisic will therefore need support

On the other side, the next world-class task awaits with Mbappé. Konrad Laimer is likely to play a key role here. The Austrian has shown several times this season that he can also hold his own against absolute top wingers. His aggression, gallantry and discipline make him one of the most unpleasant opponents in this position. Here, too, collective protection, good timing when moving out and, above all, concentration over the entire playing time are required. Mbappé is a player who can still strike even if he has been inconspicuous for a long time beforehand

Olise and Díaz could expose Real’s weaknesses

As big as the focus on Real’s attack is, FC Bayern have enough individual class of their own to pose huge problems for the Madrilenians. Michael Olise and Luis Díaz in particular could become key figures in this game

Both wingers are having an outstanding season and are among Munich’s most important attacking weapons. Between them, they have scored more than 80 goals in all competitions and have shown on several occasions, particularly in the Champions League, that they can make the difference on this stage

Real’s left side of defence in particular looks vulnerable. Ferland Mendy is out, while Álvaro Carreras and Fran García have not always impressed this season. Both have attacking qualities, but are by no means invulnerable at the back. This is precisely where Bayern could come into play. If Olise gets into isolated duels, it could be very uncomfortable for Real

The clash between Luis Díaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold will be particularly interesting. The two know each other from their time together at Liverpool, which gives this duel an added flavour. Alexander-Arnold brings a lot of quality in the build-up play, but is not always unassailable defensively. Díaz, on the other hand, has shown several times this season how explosive and dangerous he can be one-on-one. His performances against Atalanta and PSG have impressively underlined that he can also be a difference-maker against top opponents

Who controls the center?

In addition to the duels on the flanks, the center of midfield is likely to be one of the most important areas of the game. FC Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic are set to play. Both embody different but complementary qualities: Kimmich brings structure, rhythm and leadership to the game, while Pavlovic brings calmness, understanding of the game and remarkable maturity for his age

On the Real side, Aurélien Tchouaméni is the clear fixture. The Frenchman has developed into a real midfield boss this season and brings stability to the Madrilenians‘ play. His presence on the ball, but also his ability to move the game forward quickly, make him a decisive factor. It remains to be seen who will line up alongside him. Eduardo Camavinga brings more dynamism and aggression, while youngster Thiago Pitarch has recently been repeatedly trusted by Arbeloa

A crucial part of the game could be decided here. Whoever takes control in the center, whoever wins second balls and whoever dictates the tempo will give their team an enormous advantage. In such a tight duel, dominance in midfield can decide whether Bayern get their wingers into good situations or whether Real can play out their transitional moments

Neuer versus Lunin: Experience meets little match practice

There is also a lot to be said for a key duel in goal. Manuel Neuer has returned in good time and brings enormous experience to this game. Even if he is no longer the Neuer of ten years ago, he remains an important factor for Bayern with his charisma, reflexes and opening up the game

At the same time, his last big clash with Real is probably still in the back of his mind. In the semi-final second leg two years ago, a mistake by him led to Madrid’s turnaround. That is precisely why Neuer will now be particularly motivated to put that chapter right

Andriy Lunin, who will have to deputise for the injured Thibaut Courtois, will be at the opposite end of the pitch. Lunin is undoubtedly a good goalkeeper, but he does not have the experience and consistency of Courtois. He has also lacked regular match practice at the very highest level this season. This could be precisely the starting point for Bayern. Shots from distance, crosses, pressure in penalty areas – all of these could keep Lunin busier than a fit Courtois

In the end, this game comes down to a familiar but crucial point: balance. Bayern must be courageous, but must not lose themselves in blind offensive actions. Real thrive on moments, on switching situations, on individual flashes of inspiration. Anyone who takes too many risks against this team will quickly run into an open knife

At the same time, Bayern must not be too cautious, because Real’s defence is by no means invulnerable. In recent weeks, there have been several phases in which the Madrilenians appeared unfocused, defended poorly or had problems at the back. Bayern must recognise precisely these moments and exploit them consistently

Munich have the quality to hurt Real at the Bernabéu, but they will have to not only keep up in the direct duels, but also be decisive in some crucial situations. Whether on the wings, in the center or in the penalty area – this quarter-final will be decided by world-class players, and there are more than enough of them on the pitch on both sides.
