The discussions surrounding Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern continue unabated. Following recent reports of a possible departure in 2027, Munich’s sporting director has now commented on the speculation himself for the first time
The debate was triggered by a report in Sport BILD, according to which a contract extension for the 52-year-old at the German record champions is by no means certain. According to the report, the chances of a continued collaboration beyond 2027 are currently around 50:50
According to the report, Eberl is the subject of controversial discussions within FCB, with reports claiming that there is no unrestricted relationship of trust between the sporting director and some decision-makers at management level
At the matchday press conference ahead of the upcoming Bundesliga game against Bayer Leverkusen, Eberl was asked directly about the current speculation. However, the Bayern boss was hardly impressed. „The reports bounce off me. There has always been criticism,“ explained the 52-year-old
Instead of dealing with possible future scenarios, Eberl is currently focusing clearly on the sporting goals of the current season. „I’m concentrating on my work and our work. Things are going well for us and we can achieve a lot this season. That’s the focus.“
At the same time, the sporting director emphasized that the discussions motivate him rather than burden him. „But it spurs me on that the work we have done is bearing fruit. That’s what counts for me.“

According to the report, a final decision on Eberl’s future has not yet been made, but it is clear that the club’s management will deal with the issue more intensively in the coming months
According to BILD, the personnel issue will be on the agenda in May, when the supervisory board could discuss a possible contract extension
Should FC Bayern actually decide against an extension, the club may not even have to appoint an external successor. According to the report, an internal solution would also be conceivable, in which case CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen and sports director Christoph Freund could take on additional responsibilities
While Eberl’s future currently appears to be open, the situation is much clearer for the other two managers. Their contracts also expire in the summer of 2027 – but an extension is considered very likely within the club.
