Tom Bischof is facing a pivotal season with FC Bayern. After his first year in Munich, the 21-year-old is expected to take the next step and establish himself permanently in central midfield. Teammate Jonathan Tah believes the youngster is capable of making his breakthrough—but at the same time makes it clear what matters most now.

With Leon Goretzka’s departure, Bischof’s chances of getting more playing time in the center have improved. In his debut season, the former Hoffenheim player did make numerous appearances, but he often had to fill in on the left side of defense and was rarely able to showcase his qualities in midfield at his preferred position.

That could change in the coming season. Nevertheless, the competition is fierce. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic are currently considered the first choices in the center, and young talent Bara Ndiaye is also expected to take on a bigger role in the first-team squad in the future.

Tah sees great potential

Jonathan Tah is convinced that Bischof has what it takes to establish himself in the long run. After the friendly against FC Rottach-Egern, the center back emphasized that a new phase in the 21-year-old’s development is now beginning. “He’s a very gifted, talented young man who’s maturing into a full-fledged player. I also believe that this is his next step,” Tah explained.

The national team player also pointed out that Bischof was already able to gain valuable experience during his first season with Bayern.

“He already got a fair amount of playing time last season, though perhaps not always in his usual position. He made an impact there,” said Tah. Now, the focus is on taking the next step in his development: “This is his chance to get even better. To do that, he has to work hard in training. Then he’ll earn it.”

Competition in midfield is heating up

Competition in central midfield is likely to intensify even further in the coming weeks. In addition to Kimmich, Pavlovic, and Bischof, FC Bayern is also counting on new signing Bara Ndiaye, who is set to be signed permanently following his loan spell.

Sporting Director Max Eberl recently confirmed that the Senegalese player is set to take the roster spot that became available following the sale of Noel Aseko.

“We’ve sold Noel Aseko, which has freed up a roster spot that Bara is set to take. This arrangement with the Gambinos Stars isn’t quite that simple. But he’s here and has been given permission to join the Asian tour. But everything still needs to be finalized contractually. Once that’s done, we can make it official,” Eberl explained.

Despite the growing competition, Bischof has made a positive impression during preseason so far. With the trust of Vincent Kompany and the support of experienced leaders like Jonathan Tah, the 21-year-old is in an ideal position to establish himself permanently in Bayern’s midfield for the new season. His grace period is over—now it’s time for the next step in his development.
