Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United losing 2-1 at Brightton.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent, concentrating instead on matters on the pitch and Newcastle United losing a game…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Brighton fans, plus the odd Newcastle supporter (and Mackem!) also contributing:
‘Brilliant from Welbeck. I just thought we had great energy and physicality today, delighted to get the winner after Newcastle had come back in to the game and looked threatening. Baleba, Rutter, Dunk, all excellent.
Deserved the victory, our jinx over Newcastle continues – their fans are magnificent though. UTA’
‘Great win for us today. Newcastle are a top side even though their table position says otherwise. To beat them is good for the seaside seagull soul.
And as for Danny W….he’s just something else a bit special. A good player, a good role model and generally a good man. Shame he’s not 5 years younger or else he’d be looking to get into the England squad.’
‘Newcastle aren’t a top side away from home in the League. Last time they scored an away League goal before today, was in May – coincidentally against Brighton.’
‘A bit silly given there wasn’t any games over the summer. makes it sound much worse than it is.’
‘Decent game between two teams who wanted to play football. Brighton a bit fresher. Sensible refereeing for a change!’
‘Yep – Brighton definitely do better against teams that turn up for a contest. It’s the ones that play the negative stuff we’re still struggling with. Need to sort that before we progress any further.’
‘Yes, both on field decisions and VAR were generally correct bearing in mind it’s a contact sport, and done mercifully quickly.’
‘For me, Danny Welbeck and Tony bloom fall under the same bracket. Class…’
‘Can I just say I count my lucky stars that we have Mr Bloom and not Mr Marikanis as our owner…’
‘Danny gets better with age.
I’m a Gunner and when he left thought he was finished.
He’s proved me wrong.’
‘Welbeck is a Mackem so even more pleasurable for him to sink an abject Newcastle team. Howe has clearly lost the dressing room and has to go. Get Graham Potter in.’
‘Surprising you’ve come out with that. I’d be careful what you wish for.
Eddie Howe is very good manager.
Today, Danny Welbeck was the difference. Does that make Eddie Howe a bad manager because of Danny?!
He’s good but that not that good, you’d be mad to contemplate in getting rid of Eddie Howe now.
Again, be careful what you wish for.
Potter!!!’
‘Heard about the Geordie who went to the travel agent to ask for suggestions where he should go on holiday? “Well,” said the agent, “you can’t beat Brighton”!’
‘In the 90’s and 00’s, Southampton were Newcastle’s south coast bogey team. Le Tissier always scored spectacularly on MOTD.
Brighton have now taken over that mantle.’
‘Two committed teams who wanted to win.’
‘Brighton in complete control the first half but newcastle came back well with 30 mins left . Good result seagulls.’
‘Botman and Thiaw didn’t have international travelling this week and it was Botman’s mistakes that cost the two goals. Feels a bit unfair on Thiaw, but he seemed to be where he was supposed to be.
Maybe you can argue the front 6 were under par, but there was a lot of good passing and moving. Non-fatigued Murphy was definitely terrific when he came on and Miley had an impact with the assist.’
‘Give Howe a ten year contract it’s great fun to watch.’
‘You’re not even in the same galaxy as Eddie Howe, childish comment.’
‘Yet you still care enough to reply? It’s called banter from a long suffering Sunderland fan and all you offer is an infantile reply. Oh the irony.’
‘It is apt that you are on this involving Brighton. Are you lot bothering Seagulls again?’
‘The fact that you admit to being a Sunderland fan, posting on a Newcastle have your say, on a day when your team won, says so much about your mentality.’
‘You’re absolutely right. Champions league football is fun to watch.’
‘Lovely finish from Woltemade, beautiful goal.’
‘Just a shout out to the Newcastle fans. Was sat near them with my Son and they sang pretty much all game. And despite losing were in good spirits at the end, with the end result being some had an impromptu kick around with my boy after I got a ball from the club shop. Class all round. Hope you have a good night out in Brighton!’
‘That was just a very entraining game of football!
One that you’re happy to pay good money to watch.
On paper Newcastle have the better players but it just depends which Brighton side turns up at the moment.
Thankfully the one that pressed, passed quickly and had someone to put the ball in the net.
The defence played superbly today & either team could have won based on the number of chances created.’
