Interesting to read through these BBC Sport comments, following on from Newcastle United winning 3-0 against Ipswich.
The comments from neutrals especially telling…
A lot of it different to what Newcastle United fans had come to expect from the BBC Sport ‘neutrals’.
The BBC Sport comments from neutrals in the past had been overwhelmingly a catalogue of abuse aimed at NUFC supporters.
Particularly stuff about the Newcastle United owners and the media-inspired pile-ons that NUFC fans have become used to, when blamed for who now owns their club.
On this occasion the politics entirely absent…
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals, Ipswich Town fans and the odd Newcastle supporter also contributing:
‘Superb support from the traveling Tractors yet again.
Truth is we were never good enough to stay in the PL this time but what a brilliant ride we had getting there.
Well done Town, and I for one am looking forward to next season where we can hopefully compete in the championship.
Well done Toon on a brilliant season for you. COYB.’
‘Thanks mate and wish you all the best next season. Sadly over the last thirty years money has ruined this game all over the world.’
‘Rubbish! The PL has become the league to watch globally. This season with the race to European football will go to the wire. Teams like Brighton, Brentford, forest, etc show teams can compete. Get over yourself and support a league two team if that is how you feel.’
‘Magnificent Tonali at it again. He cannot stop running. Winning balls finding teammates in great positions.
Trippier was outstanding.’
‘Great to read so many classy comments from Toon fans on here after the absolute nonsense we got from entitled arrogant plastic Arsenal fans last week.
Hopefully Town will be back to make a better go of it next time, just impossible to build quickly enough to bridge the gap after double promotion. All the best Toon, great season for you.’
‘Well done Toon – keep it going.
Best of luck to Ipswich next season.
One Bobby Robson.’
‘What a team wor Bobby produced back in day for Ipswich!
There’s a lot of affinity between us because of that so hopefully you’ll be back up soon lads.’
‘Consolation – at least Ipswich had more fight than Southampton and Leicester put together. They have a better chance of bouncing back than these two. It’s going to be a long recovery for the other two.’
‘(Liverpool fan) What a great season Newcastle is having. They could get top four after winning a trophy. Hopefully we also celebrate as tomorrow we could be crowned champions.’
‘I think there is (and has been) very little doubt Liverpool will be crowned champions, and deservedly so for a great season, all the more impressive for being with a Premier League debutant manager.
One suspects the competition will be a little fiercer next season though…’
‘(Liverpool fan) Who would have thought both Newcastle and Liverpool would win a trophy and make the top four this season. I bet no one predicted that would happen.’
‘Respect to the number of goals Newcastle have managed this season.’
‘They were 2nd or 3rd top scorers last season, helps to have one of the best strikers in europe up front.’
‘Quality dive for the pen.’
‘Only one player was booked for diving today and it wasn’t a Newcastle player.’
‘Congrats Newcastle. Great season for you and well deserved. Disappointed as a town fan obviously but not massively surprised. Gave it a go in first half of season but lost it in second. Hopefully we can build and be back in stronger shape. Great to see Eddie back too. COYB.’
‘Easy win for Newcastle, sad to see Ipswich Town go down, but it was inevitable. Congrats on 3rd place so far, for the Geordies. Should make top-5 quite comfortably.’
‘Osula.. One to watch.. Wilson.. One not to watch!’
‘Sadly was a step too far for us but credit to the Newcastle fans in the lower tier underneath us that turned round and clapped us at the end and for the fans kind words outside after the game.’
‘Why is ref incompetence on the rise in the PL?’
‘Is no-one else seriously gonna mention how bad the refereeing team was today? They just keep getting worse….’
‘A series of incomprehensible decisions throughout the game. The ref’s timekeeping was even worse. Before the penalty award, we were in 1 additional minute at the end of a half that, to that point, had 3 VAR reviews, a red card a corner delayed by 2 minutes to book 2 players. After the stoppage time penalty was scored, the referee played on for a further minute and a half.’
‘Well done Newcastle, sad to see Ipswich go down but it was inevitable from a few weeks ago really. I have to say that the referee in todays game was an absolute joke, he totally lost control of the game and made some appalling decisions and kept relying on VAR, he needs to lose his job in my opinion. It is hard enough to win games without useless refereeing decisions like today.’
