The 23-year-old is considered one of the most standout players in the Austrian Bundesliga and had apparently recently attracted interest from several clubs. According to information from kicker, there was particularly strong interest in the versatile winger from the Bundesliga. The Munich club has now secured her services.

Mattner brings an exciting profile to the table. The Vienna native holds both German and French passports, was trained at First Vienna FC, and moved to SKN St. Pölten in January 2023. There, she not only won national titles but also gained international experience in the Champions League.

With St. Pölten, Mattner won the league and cup double in both 2023 and 2024, followed by another league title in 2025. Last season, she scored 15 goals in 16 league games and finished second in the voting for Player of the Season in Austria.

Rech praises Mattner’s versatility

Bianca Rech expressed her satisfaction with the successful transfer. The Director of Women’s Football at FC Bayern explained: “We are very happy that we were able to sign Sarah and that she will be playing in an FC Bayern jersey starting next season. She has developed very well in the Austrian Bundesliga over the past few years and was one of the standout players of the season there—so her nomination for the German national team this year comes as no surprise. Sarah has a very interesting profile: she is versatile on the wing in both attack and defense, possesses excellent physicality and speed, and enjoys taking on opponents one-on-one. We are convinced that, with her potential and mentality, she will take the next step with us and bring additional quality and versatility to our team.”

Mattner herself is also looking forward to the new challenge: “I’m very happy to have signed with FC Bayern. It’s a big step in my career, and it felt right from the very first moment. The club is one of the biggest in the world, and I think every player is thrilled when FC Bayern takes notice of them.”

According to the 23-year-old, the overall package in Munich was the deciding factor. “The level of soccer is incredibly high, the conditions are extremely professional, and yet everything feels very family-like. This combination of the highest standards and an approachable, human environment is something special to me. Plus, the city and the surroundings suit me very well, and the proximity to my home also plays an important role. All of this makes me feel very positive and gives me the sense that I’m exactly where I need to be. Here, I have the opportunity to develop both athletically and personally.”

On the field, Mattner’s versatility opens up several options for Bayern. With the DFB, she played as a right back, but she can also play offensively on both wings. This means she could be used defensively as an alternative to Giulia Gwinn or offensively as an additional option for Klara Bühl or on the right side.
