Wolfsburg beat OL Lyonnes 1-0 in the Women’s Champions League quarter-final first leg on Tuesday, Lineth Beerensteyn’s deflected strike proving decisive after Lindsey Heaps’ mistake. As reported by L'Équipe, the Dutch forward tormented Lyon and the American midfielder had a night to forget.
Christiane Endler was busy early, tipping away a Kielland effort in the second minute. In the 14th minute, Heaps played a loose pass that Vivien Endemann intercepted before releasing Beerensteyn, whose shot from distance glanced off Damaris Egurrola and wrong-footed the Lyon keeper.
Melchie Dumornay found Ada Hegerberg with a fine cross in the 23rd minute, but she failed to hit the target. Beerensteyn then nodded over from Svenja Huth’s centre in the 29th, before Endler parried a Peddermors drive in the 30th. Dumornay sliced wildly in the 33rd.
After the break, Dumornay failed to hit the target from a Chawinga delivery in the 53rd minute. Heaps was replaced by Korbin Shrader in the 60th, the substitute forcing a dangerous save in the 61st then shooting too centrally in the 63rd. Egurrola was booked for a foul on Beerensteyn in the 67th and made way for Lily Yohannes in the 71st.
Endemann departed for Cora Zicai in the 75th as Wolfsburg managed the game. Beerensteyn capped an influential display with a superb defensive header in the 90th to clear a Katoto cross. Endler’s handling was secure thereafter, but Lyon could not find a leveller.
