For once, Standard Liege have had a pretty settled summer. Vincent Euvrard remains in charge, and they have gotten on with replacing players in the squad and look to be one of the few sides that are ready for the start of the season. The goal is to win one of the European tickets and finally get back into continental competitions. That should help the finances as well and start the rebuild of one of Belgium’s biggest clubs.

Key player: Casper Nielsen

By the end of last season, Nielsen had begun to show why many had believed he’d be Standard Liege’s important player last season. The Danish central midfielder has had to battle through injuries and personal tragedy in recent years, but on his day he can be a key driving force in midfield. Standard Liege will need that, as well as some goals from Nielsen if they want to achieve their goals this season.

Young player to watch: Bernard Nguene

There was a lot of excitement when Standard Liege announced the signing of Nguene from Nice in the winter. The 20-year-old from Cameroon showed a handful of moments during his 14 appearances last season, scoring one goal. Fans of Standard Liege will be hoping that, after a full summer with the side to settle in properly, Nguene will be ready to hit the ground running this season, although the side have brought in a number of attack minded players for him to compete with.
