Alireza Beiranvand’s seven saves secured Iran a 0-0 draw with Belgium on Sunday, while Nathan Ngoy’s red card hampered the Belgians late on.

L'Équipe highlights the standout performers in their player ratings. Beiranvand denied every effort on target and was assured in the air, less so with his feet.

Shoja Khalilzadeh marshalled the back three against Romelu Lukaku, making 14 clearances and winning nine of 12 duels. He glanced a header just wide on 65 minutes.

Mehdi Taremi saw a finish ruled out for a marginal back offside on 25 minutes, forced Thibaut Courtois into a save on 53 and drew Ngoy’s dismissal on 66.

Ehsan Hajisafi, at left wing-back and captain at 36, made five recoveries and delivered the free-kick before Taremi’s chalked-off goal, then went off for Milal Mohammadi on 66 minutes. Leandro Trossard was one of few Belgians to beat his man on the left and used the ball cleanly.

Ngoy’s underhit back-pass led to a foul on Taremi and a red card on 66 minutes, leaving Belgium with 10. Both teams are on two points, with Iran leading Group G pending New Zealand v Egypt, and Belgium face New Zealand on Friday 26 June for a place in the last 16.
