Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene has confirmed Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, describing the diagnosis as devastating.

The 24-year-old sustained the damage while playing for Belgium in their 4-1 World Cup win over the USA.

Hacene said medical tests confirmed the ACL rupture. He added that he, Onana and Villa had consulted immediately to settle on the best recovery plan, with the next steps in treatment and rehabilitation to be set in the coming days. He stressed the player would have full support throughout.

Onana now faces a lengthy rehabilitation and is expected to miss the majority of the 2026-27 season for Villa.

The injury is a significant setback for Villa, who may need to address his long-term absence in the transfer market.

Villa were already navigating a difficult summer as they aim to stay within UEFA’s financial fair play parameters, and midfield had not been a priority area, which could now change.
