England secured top spot in World Cup Group L with a 2-0 victory over eliminated Panama at MetLife Stadium. A frustrating first half saw Orlando Mosquera deny Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka, and Harry Kane as the score remained level at the break.
Jude Bellingham broke the deadlock in the 62nd minute with a finish from Saka's corner before setting up Kane's record-breaking header five minutes later. GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from Panama v England.
Bellingham delivered the match-winning contributions with a goal and assist within five minutes that transformed a frustrating contest. His 62nd-minute finish from Bukayo Saka's corner gave England the breakthrough after over an hour of Panamanian resistance.
Just five minutes after scoring, Bellingham turned provider with a cross from the left that Harry Kane headed home to double the lead. His earlier long-range attempt in the first half went wide, but when it mattered most, England's number 10 found his touch in front of goal.
Bellingham was withdrawn at 71 minutes with his work complete, having changed the complexion of the match in a decisive spell. His contributions ensured England topped their group and will face a third-placed team in the knockout rounds rather than a runner-up.
Kane became England's all-time leading World Cup scorer with his 67th-minute header, taking his tournament tally to 11 goals and surpassing Gary Lineker. Rising to meet Bellingham's cross from the left, Kane guided the ball past Mosquera to double England's advantage.
Earlier in the match, Kane had a shot deflected for a corner from a quick free kick in the 17th minute and forced Mosquera into a save in the 57th minute. He worked hard leading the line throughout, dropping deep to link play when service proved limited.
The captain's milestone goal extended his run of scoring at three consecutive World Cups, adding to his 2018 double against Panama. Kane was substituted in the 84th minute having secured the record, leaving the field with England's victory assured.
Rogers endured a frustrating afternoon on the right side of midfield and failed to make a meaningful impact on the contest. Despite facing an already-eliminated Panama side, he found space difficult to locate against their compact defensive block throughout the full 90 minutes.
His involvement in attacking phases was limited, with England's creative threat flowing through Bellingham, Saka, and Rashford on the opposite flank. Rogers lost possession on several occasions when attempting to link with teammates and did not create clear chances or register shots on target.
While Bellingham and Kane provided the decisive contributions that secured victory, Rogers' peripheral display meant his presence went largely unnoticed. England's dominance in the result masked an individual performance that offered little to suggest he seized his opportunity in a rotated lineup.
