According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica have closed their winter window and will not sign another wide player, with Dodi Lukebakio nearing an unrestricted return to training and Andreas Schjelderup and Gianluca Prestianni showing progress.
Reinforcing the flanks had been a priority after the window reopened. André Luiz of Rio Ave and Wesley of Al Nassr were leading targets, but demands from Evangelos Marinakis, investor in the Vila do Conde club, and terms set by the Saudi side blocked both moves.
In that context, Lukebakio’s imminent return weighed on the final call. The 28-year-old Belgian winger is expected back on the grass this week, roughly two and a half months after fracturing his left ankle on international duty. After surgery, he is in the final stretch of rehab and could be considered for the home game against Alverca or the trip to Santa Clara.
His availability would be a significant boost for José Mourinho. The Belgian international made an early impact after joining from Sevilla, starting 10 straight matches after an initial cameo and recording one goal and three assists before injury.
The Special One now has broader options out wide. Schjelderup and Prestianni are earning minutes, Sidny Lopes Cabral has settled quickly, and Bruma is working back towards full sharpness after a long lay-off.
