Benfica issued a statement on Saturday, 11 April, denying a Correio da Manhã report alleging José Mourinho humiliated Dodi Lukebakio in front of the squad. The club said the claim was completely false.
It added that such speculation formed part of a shameful attempt to destabilise the club and its staff, accusing the newspaper of systematically breaching basic journalistic ethics.
The disputed story followed the draw with Casa Pia, after which Mourinho used his post-match press conference to criticise the squad, saying some players did not deserve to play again.
There have since been reports of clashes with senior players, with Lukebakio among those mentioned in Rio Maior.
The row comes a day before Benfica face Nacional, seeking to return to winning ways after missing the chance to cut the gap to Porto and Sporting. The game is on Sunday, 12 April at 18:00 at Estádio da Luz, with Fábio Veríssimo to referee.
