Benfica’s 2-1 victory over Sporting at Alvalade, in matchweek 30, stretched their Liga Portugal Betclic unbeaten run to 45 and lifted them into second place.

According to Glorioso 1904, José Mourinho gave the squad Monday, 20 April, off to aid recovery and check on knocks, with training due to resume on Tuesday, 21 April, ahead of Saturday’s match against Moreirense on 25 April.

The sequence started with a 3-2 win at Estrela da Amadora on 2 February last year, following a 1-3 loss to Casa Pia in Rio Maior on 25 January. It now reads 33 wins and 12 draws, still short of Benfica’s record 56 without defeat set between 1976/77 and 1978/79.

The derby success also ended a four-year wait for a league win at Sporting’s ground, the previous away victory there coming 2-0 on 17 April 2022.

Centre-back Tomás Araújo started but was withdrawn on 77 minutes with right calf discomfort after more than three weeks out. Andreas Schjelderup and Gianluca Prestianni also showed clear signs of fatigue as workloads mount.
