Benfica fans clash after 2-1 defeat at St Gallen | OneFootball

Benfica lost 2-1 at St Gallen in the first leg of the second qualifying round of the Europa League. According to Glorioso 1904, clashes then broke out in the visitors’ section after full time.

Supporters had directed protests at the team, voicing frustration with the result in Switzerland. The situation escalated when some in the away end engaged in physical altercations, while others stepped in to try to stop the disorder.

The incidents occurred on the same day the club had appealed for responsible behaviour. Before kick-off, Benfica issued a reminder that it is under a suspended UEFA sanction and warned of the consequences of any breach of regulations.

The club stressed that no Benfica supporter wants the team deprived of backing and urged fans to combine passion with responsibility and respect for rules at home and abroad.

UEFA sanctioned Benfica over incidents in the match against Real Madrid played in February, imposing a one-year suspended punishment. The ruling also ordered the partial closure of 500 seats in sectors 10 and 11 at the Estádio da Luz due to racist and discriminatory conduct by some supporters.
