Benfica legend José Augusto turns 89 on Monday, 13 April, and remains a towering figure for the club.
According to Glorioso 1904, the accomplished right winger was central to the golden generation that dominated European football in the 1960s. He represented Benfica from 1959/60 to 1969/70, clocking hundreds of appearances and major honours.
He helped deliver European Cup glory in 1961 and 1962, against Barcelona then Real Madrid. Those triumphs put Portugal at the top of the European game.
With Portugal, he was part of the team that finished third at the 1966 World Cup, still the country's best World Cup finals campaign. He later coached Farense and Penafiel, and received a Cosme Damião award.
In Benfica colours, the former forward made 368 appearances, scoring 176 goals and providing two assists. His honours include eight league titles and three Portuguese Cups, and he popularised the rallying cry long live Benfica.
