Red Bull Bragantino have imposed a heavy sanction on Benfica loanee Gustavo Marques after sexist remarks made following the 1-2 defeat to São Paulo. The club said in a statement that the centre-back has been fined 50% of his total wages and will not be called up to face Athletico-PR on Wednesday.

The amount will be directed to Rendar, an NGO that supports women in vulnerable situations in the Bragança Paulista region. Social and educational initiatives are to be intensified in partnership with Rendar and other local institutions.

Marques’s remarks were made about referee Daiane Muniz after Saturday’s match.

This year the defender has nine competitive appearances, six in the Campeonato Paulista and three in the Brasileirão, totalling 810 minutes. He has scored two goals.

Marques, 24, is valued at 1.4 million euros.
