Benfica are monitoring Wout Weghorst for 2026/27, but Marco Silva’s arrival has tempered his status as a frontline target. According to A BOLA, the 33-year-old is on the Rui Costa-led hierarchy’s list, although any deal is far from assured.
Out of contract with Ajax, the Netherlands international has indicated his time there is over, saying, “Yes, I think so. They were two very beautiful years. I am very proud to have played for Ajax,” he told ESPN.
Weghorst’s physical profile, international experience and ability to lead the line appealed to José Mourinho. Had the Portuguese coach stayed at the Luz, the chances of a move would likely have been higher. Last season he produced nine goals and four assists in 34 matches.
Silva has brought a broader approach to squad building, assessing different profiles across positions and avoiding a single-route plan up front. In that context, Weghorst is now one of several options rather than an absolute priority.
The possibility is not off the table, but Benfica intend to proceed cautiously before any definitive call. The return to training is set for 25 June, with their first competitive fixture scheduled for 23 July in the Europa League second qualifying round against St. Gallen.
