Benfica to pass on Wout Weghorst over age and salary | OneFootball

Benfica will not pursue a deal for Wout Weghorst due to concerns over his age and salary, according to Glorioso 1904.

The Dutch forward appeals to José Mourinho’s staff and the board, but those factors have cooled any push to sign him.

At 33, and turning 34 at the start of next season, he is viewed as too old for the club’s project. Mourinho wants a striker in his prime who can compete for starts alongside Vangelis Pavlidis and Franjo Ivanovic.

Weghorst earns around two and a half million euros net at Ajax, a figure the Benfica hierarchy consider high.

This season for Ajax, he has played 29 matches, 24 in the Eredivisie and five in the Champions League, totalling 1,867 minutes. He has eight goals and three assists. He is valued at around two and a half million euros.
