Benfica’s goalkeeping situation could shift before the deadline, with Anatoliy Trubin having slipped down the pecking order and interest from Europe growing. The club are preparing scenarios for the position.
A Bola has suggested the plan would be to move Trubin on and try to pave the way for Ederson to return to the Estádio da Luz, an idea described as simple to write but far harder to execute. The closing days of the window were framed as likely to make the position one of the more intriguing dossiers until 31 August.
The rationale offered was that some comebacks fit for quality and others for history, and this one would tick both boxes. Ederson was said to know Benfica and the demands of winning, and enjoys strong backing from supporters.
In reality, a comeback now is increasingly unrealistic. Ederson, 33, has a deal with a club in Türkiye through 2028 and his wages are considered prohibitive for Benfica.
Beyond salary, there is no room to negotiate an exit with the Istanbul side. They are not inclined to ease the operation and, on these terms, Benfica do not see scope to proceed.
