Benfica’s women’s futsal side were crowned national champions on Saturday, but coach Paulinho Roxo used the celebrations to denounce interference and indicated he may leave.
According to Glorioso 1904, the 4-1 win over Nun'Álvares sealed their eighth national title. After the final whistle, Roxo said it had been a difficult year with people trying to meddle in his work, stressing he earned his qualifications alone and that nobody should touch his job. He added he would very likely step down, saying he would do so with a clear conscience and referencing a saying about luck.
Long-standing disagreements between the Brazilian and the club structure, led by Raul Moreira and Rita Martins, centred on squad building and rumbled on throughout the season.
Tension peaked when Roxo demanded immediate changes to the backroom staff or he would quit during a decisive phase, prompting the departures of Fábio Jerónimo, Maria Jacinto and Pedro Canelas.
With Roxo’s turbulent exit, even after the triumph, the head coach role is expected to go to Maria Martins, a former Atlético coach and ex-Sporting player.
