Benjamin Sesko: United ace’s bold claim about Cristiano Ronaldo

Benjamin Sesko enjoyed a decent debut campaign with Manchester United, even though his good run was halted by an injury in the final weeks of the season. The Red Devils signed the Slovenian from RB Leipzig last summer to address their goalscoring woes.

Sesko experienced a slow start to life at Old Trafford under former head coach Ruben Amorim. However, the 23 year old came into his own following the arrival of Michael Carrick as the Portuguese’s replacement in January.

The Slovenian featured in 13 of the Englishman’s first 14 games in charge, scoring seven goals, before missing the final three games of the campaign due to a calf injury.

Sesko recently took part in a Q&A session with United’s media team, where he answered a myriad of questions, including his favourite goal of the season.

Cristiano Ronaldo influence

When asked to name the greatest striker of all time, Sesko said: “I’m going to go goals wise, he’s just way ahead, I will go for Cristiano Ronaldo.”

The Slovenian was next asked if he had learned anything from the United legend’s game, prompting a swift response: “Scoring goals!”

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was mentioned once again, when Sesko was asked whether there was a goal from any game he wished he had scored. Sesko said: “I think it was Cristiano Ronaldo against Porto in the Champions League. From I don’t know how far but…”

The interviewer was quick to point out that the Slovenian has a venomous shot in his arsenal, forcing the player to break into a smile and state: “Just shoot, don’t think.”

Favourite goal for United

Sesko also revealed that his 96th-minute equaliser in the 1-1 draw away to West Ham United in February was his favourite goal this season. He said: “I think it was against West Ham, was a really difficult one.”

The Slovenian started the game from the bench, before replacing Matheus Cunha in the 69th minute. Six minutes into added time, Sesko unleashed an exquisite flick off a Bryan Mbeumo ball from the right to secure a dramatic point at the London Stadium.

Sesko named the 3-2 win over Liverpool at the beginning of last month as his favourite game for United, adding: “Yeah, against Liverpool, is crazy anyway so, you know, the rivalry.” The Slovenian doubled the score in the 13th minute after Cunha had given United the lead in the fifth minute at Old Trafford.

However, Sesko picked up a knock in the first half and had to be replaced at the break by Amad. It turned out to be the Slovenian’s final appearance of the season for the Red Devils.

Sesko names funniest United player

Sesko also provided an insight into his daily life, revealing that he prefers early-morning gym sessions and listens to Pop Smoke to get focused. When asked one thing he would have liked to have from Slovenia, the player responded: “Maybe some kind of food, little bits that I was eating when I was younger, you know, from Grandma and stuff.”

He also said that he prefers to play in the rain rather than the sun, because “when it’s sunny, it’s very hot.”

Sesko acknowledged that he has tried a full English breakfast a couple of times, and while he found it “very oily”, it was still good. The Slovenian went on to name Joshua Zirkzee as the funniest player in the United dressing room, and said that the atmosphere at Old Trafford was “unexplainable”.

Lisandro Martinez was named as the toughest defender he faced in training during the week of the interview. When asked to choose a player of the Year apart from Bruno Fernandes, Sesko quipped: “I’ll give it to Bryan and Cunha.”

Final Thoughts

Sesko’s resurgent run under Carrick gave fans a lot of hope and suggested that he is coming to terms with the rigours of the Premier League. Now that the Englishman has been appointed permanent manager, one can expect fireworks from the Slovenian next season.
