Benjamin Sesko is understood to have a ‘sliding scale’ release clause in his contract at RB Leipzig.
Sesko shunned interest from England last summer to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga side. The contract extension was thought to have removed his release clause, that stood at €65m (£54.2m).
Arsenal and Chelsea both expressed interest in the Slovenian striker last summer, while Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are all monitoring his situation. Several of England’s top clubs are searching for firepower, with Sesko having emerged as one of Europe’s best young number nines.
The 21-year-old has scored 17 goals in 31 appearances this season and a recent revelation has boosted the hopes of Premier League clubs.
Sky Sport Germany have revealed that Sesko’s deal still contains a release clause, that can fluctuate on a sliding scale.
The current €70m (£58m) clause could increase before the summer. According to the report, it is dependent on several performance-based metrics including games played and goals scored.
However, the presence of a release clause offers English clubs a direct route to a deal. Leipzig are currently sixth in the Bundesliga after an up-and-down campaign and at risk of missing out on Champions League qualification. Should the Germans miss out on Europe’s elite, the likelihood of Sesko’s exit will increase.
Sesko has scored 35 goals in 76 games across all competitions since signing for Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg in 2023. He’s also netted 16 times in 39 senior caps for Slovenia.
Arsenal are understood to have placed the striker near the top of their transfer wish list. The Gunners are currently without a recognised forward after season-ending injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus. Mikel Arteta expressed his disappointment at the failure to sign a forward in January, following a failed bid for Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.
