Benoît Payan, the mayor of Marseille, has condemned Olympique de Marseille’s new crest, speaking to BFM Marseille Provence outside City Hall. He called the redesign horrible.
Payan said he had seen many crests but none as ugly, describing the change as a mistake. He argued it should be corrected.
He questioned whether the badge suits OM’s identity and added that, while some suggest people will get used to it, he does not like it.
The mayor also pointed to Volkswagen rotating its badge to poke fun, likening OM’s new design to the carmaker’s logo.
Details published on eight April describe a redesign rooted in the club’s founding symbols, combining elements from several past crests, including the white ring from 1973, the M structure from 1899, curves from 1986 and the double ring from 1993.
