Inter president Beppe Marotta is adamant the defending Serie A champions must aspire to win every trophy. Amid talks Simone Inzaghi’s men prefer UEFA Champions League glory over another Scudetto, Marotta felt the urge to address these rumors.
“A club like Inter, for its history, prestige, and trophies, with all the attention we seek, cannot say ‘I want to win either the league or the Champions League,’ but must always aim to win. That’s why I am always very realistic,” Marotta said, as reported by Calciomercato.
“When I hear executives of important teams say that the important thing is to finish in the top four… No, the important thing is to win,” the Inter president continued. “If you don’t win, fine, it means the opponents were better. The bar must always be set high: if I aim to sign very important players and then I don’t succeed, it doesn’t mean I’m inadequate.
“Probably the conditions weren’t right to close the deal, but the attempt must be made. Today we’re in the Champions League, so why not fight to win it? Why not fight in the league as well? Then it depends on the opponents and also on us, but we must not be afraid, and that seems obvious to me.“
Marotta also explained his decision to hire Antonio Conte years ago. Asked why he chose the Napoli manager in 2019, the Inter chief admitted it was out of necessity.
“Because at that moment, I was convinced the club needed him. But the choice of coach also depends on the timing. There are moments when you need someone with firmness and authority, and others when perhaps the team is already well-established, and you might need more of a manager.
