Manchester City’s first-team squad will remain disappointed about their season, regardless of their fate in the FA Cup or Champions League qualification.
Pep Guardiola and his players took a further giant leap towards ending their season with a smile as they reached the final of the 2025 FA Cup for the third season in a row with a 0-2 victory over Nottingham Forest.
An opening goal from Rico Lewis inside two minutes set City on their way to success as the England international operated in an attacking midfield role, before Josko Gvardiol would slam home a bullet header from a corner in the second-half.
It is another step in the right direction for a Manchester City squad that has hugely underperformed at times during the season, particularly in the Premier League and Champions League, leaving them with plenty of work to do during the run-in.
And while Champions League qualification is now firmly in the club’s sights through a top-five finish in the Premier League, one player believes that such an achievement alongside an FA Cup triumph against Crystal Palace in the Final next month would not make for a success.
Speaking to ITV Sport on the possibility of Champions League qualification and an FA Cup triumph, Bernardo Silva insisted that he and his teammates will remain unhappy about their campaign.
“It’s not good for us, no. We’re not happy, even if we qualify for the Champions League and win the FA Cup, it wouldn’t make it a good season because our standards are much higher than that,” the Portuguese midfielder said.
“Obviously you can lose the Premier League, but at least go fight for it. We didn’t even fight for it, so we’re not happy. You can lose the Champions League but at least fight for it, and we didn’t.
“So it’s not about losing or winning in the last minute, it’s about not performing even close to your level, so no matter what happens now it will not make it a good season.”
Bernardo Silva and his Manchester City teammates resume their on-field action at the end of this week when Wolverhampton Wanderers visit the Etihad Stadium for a rare Friday night affair in the Premier League.
Pep Guardiola and his players know that they have no choice but to maintain the momentum at a crucial phase of the season, ensuring three points to further set themselves as part of the top-five in the division.
