The international break is well underway now – and one person who will have wanted it to come around even less than the average fan was Frank Lampard.
His Coventry side are top of the Championship, unbeaten and scoring for fun. He will be desperate that their momentum isn’t disrupted by a two week break.
For whatever reason, Lampard the player became a topic of conversation on the Rest is Football podcast this week. They were waxing lyrical about his abilities, and how underrated he was. Micah Richards claimed that the Chelsea legend would be considered the best in the world if he was playing now:
“If Lampard was playing now, everyone would be saying he’s the best midfielder in world football,” Richards claimed.
“Everyone was like, ‘oh, he just gets tap-ins.’ But now with the terminology that Alan’s using on Match of the Day now, the turnovers in the pockets of space, and the transitions, his late runs into the box. Everyone would be going wild for him, and he’s a top player in terms of that running to the box and how intelligent he is on the field.”
They noted he had 41 goals from outside the box in the Premier League 7 more than anyone else. And that was just the start.
Chelsea are working on their own version of Lampard right now – with Enzo Fernandez upping his goals and assists markedly in the last 12 months. But he’s still got some way to go before he’s matching the regular 20 goal seasons that Super Frank put up, let alone in the level of games Lampard was doing it in.
Now don’t forget to keep an eye on the Coventry results for the rest of this season…
