Manchester United spent nearly £220 million on new signings in the summer, and most of it went on transforming the side’s attack.

After acquiring Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, United also added a new goalkeeper in Senne Lammens to their ranks on deadline day.

However, United didn’t bring in a new centre-back despite releasing Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof at the end of last season, a risky move given Ruben Amorim is wedded to a formation that employs a three-man defence.

Heaven has settled well into life at Manchester United

Ayden Heaven’s sharp rise might have had a say in United’s decision.

The 19-year-old left north London for Manchester in January. A little more than a month later, he made his Premier League debut against his former club, Arsenal. The Englishman has never been out of the first-team picture since.

Now, another young central defender is knocking on the first team door.

Ngwashi has a very high ceiling

According to the Daily Mail, Jayden Ngwashi is firmly on the radar of the first-team decision-makers, including director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell.

The 17-year-old central defender, who has represented England and Italy at youth level, was handed an opportunity to train with United’s first team last Friday and “did not miss a beat.”

Ngwashi has earned plaudits from coaches for his technical ability and composure on the ball. Further, his positional awareness and pace allow him to seamlessly play in a high defensive line.

Tyler Fredricson, another gifted defender, has regularly attracted Amorim’s attention, but it is “Ngwashi that is the most exciting centre back prospect being developed at Carrington” at the moment.

The report states: “One scout that Daily Mail Sport spoke to believes Ngwashi’s ceiling is of a similar level to that of Crystal Palace and England’s Marc Guehi.”

Late in June, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United convinced the England U17 international to sign a new long-term deal despite proposals from clubs in England and abroad.
