Birmingham City in fresh goalkeeper transfer race after sealing Brighton deal | OneFootball

The Blues are among several clubs keen on the shot-stopper.

Birmingham City have already commenced their transfer business as they target a play-off place at a minimum next season.

The Blues experienced a mixed return to the Championship, finishing in a respectable 10th position, although it was a campaign that promised so much more.

Colombian Jhon Solis has already arrived in the West Midlands for an undisclosed fee, while Dael Fry (free) and James Beadle (loan) are also eye-catching signings, with the latter returning following a mixed loan stint last term.

While the West Midlands outfit have already acquired one goalkeeper in Beadle, it seems they are not stopping there in the transfer market.

Much of Birmingham City's success last season was built on their sturdy backline, which included on-loan keeper Beadle between the sticks.

Chris Davies' side only conceded 56 goals across the entire Championship campaign, with only Coventry City, Ipswich Town, Millwall and Middlesbrough conceding less.

Beadle emerged as Davies' number one in early October, and he never looked back, going on to make 35 league appearances, keeping eight clean sheets in the process.

While many will be expecting the 22-year-old to be the Blues' number one again next season, he could be facing fierce competition if the latest reports come to fruition.

That is because Birmingham are among several clubs interested in signing Arminia Bielefeld goalkeeper Jonas Kersken, according to The Athletic's Sebastian Stafford-Bloor.

The 25-year-old German shot-stopper made 33 appearances in 2. Bundesliga last term as Arminia finished in 13th position and while he signed a contract extension in August 2025, it is unknown how long he has remaining on his current deal.

Born in Düsseldorf, Kersken came through the youth ranks at Unterrath, Baumberg and Rot-Weiss Essen before securing a move to reputable German side Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2019.

While he made 35 appearances for their second team, he never made a senior appearance and was loaned to SV Meppen and Arminia Bielefeld before securing a permanent move in the summer of 2024.

Kersken has been Arminia's number one since he first joined on loan and has enjoyed three seasons between the sticks for the club, earning promotion to the German second tier in 2025.

Last season, the 25-year-old showed his nous as a sweeper, ranking in the top 10 per cent of goalkeepers for clearing danger in 2. Bundesliga, according to Fotmob.

However, there should be some cause for concern as he made five errors leading to goals, more than any other keeper in the division, while he prevented -3.5 goals.
