Birmingham City supporters are becoming increasingly excited about the potential Sports Quarter project.
The last couple of years have been topsy turvy for Birmingham City but now the club has a steady footing back in the Championship and things are continuing to rapidly improve off the pitch.
In the 2023/24 campaign, Birmingham succumbed to a shock relegation from the Championship before a heavy summer of spending and the appointment of Chris Davies allowed them to bounce back in the 2024/25 season.
Winning the third-tier title with a record-breaking 111 points allowed for a summer of ambition and optimism last year, with chairman Tom Wagner being as bold as ever in his public proclamations.
Returning to a higher level was tougher than many anticipated and Birmingham eventually stumbled to a fairly underwhelming mid-table finish – but they are expected to better for that experience and capable of challenging for promotion, or at least the top six, next season.
In the meantime, work continues to be done to grow the club off the pitch and this week has seen Richard Parker, the West Midlands Mayor, launch the Mayoral Development Corporation to ‘speed up’ the regeneration of East Birmingham – and the plan of the Sports Quarter.
Parker has revealed the launch of an ‘ambitious’ project that will deliver a sizeable boost for the Sports Quarter plans and could bring £11bn of investment to the area.

Birmingham supporters have been loyal behind their ownership and the running of the club throughout their reign, even through the relegation from the Championship.
However, excitement levels have been raised further by new and important political support for a project that could transform both the city and the club, as explained by FLW’s Birmingham Fan Pundit Jason Moore.
Jason says: “For Blues fans, we’re already excited anyway because we’re in the headspace of this is definitely going to happen. Knighthead have said ‘don’t say you can do things if you can’t do them’ and so they wouldn’t say something they couldn’t do etc.
“Blues fans are already excited. If anything, it’s just refreshing and it’s just nice to see that we’ve actually got backing behind it.
“I’m surprised it’s actually took that long to get such open backing anyway because it’s going to be absolutely massive for Birmingham.
“I am born and bred Brummie and, especially for that part of the city that is desperate for investment, and it is going to revamp the area and revamp the club.
“Full speed ahead. Obviously, excitement levels are above whatever exciting levels we were already at. This has been the state of Birmingham fans for a while now and we’ve seen all the stadium plans and stuff like that.
“I’m massively excited and full speed ahead. I can’t wait for the day when they’ve got official planning permission and they can put that first spade in – that is where I’ll think ‘oh, this is actually happening’; I can’t wait.”

The future does appear very bright for Birmingham, both on and off the pitch.
There will be a belief that the off-field work being done will support the continued progress and upward trajectory on it – but work does need to be done over the summer.
Birmingham fell well short of their pre-season expectations and, despite it being by no means a disaster in their first campaign following League One promotion, there will be extra demands for next season.
The Blues have a talented but bloated squad and a lack of clarity and cohesion was apparent throughout the campaign.
Birmingham may well continue to grow as a club off the pitch but they will want to ensure the actual team keeps up with the pace – and that means it could well be a very important and busy summer for them.
