There have been plenty of sack calls surrounding the Blues boss this season

Birmingham City are in for an intriguing summer after not exactly living up to the expectation which surrounded the club at the beginning of the season.

Blues have become one of the most ambitious clubs in English football under Tom Wagner's ownership, with the American investor setting out a clear vision of the club returning to the Premier League for the first time in over 15 years as soon as possible, as well as the exciting move to the 62,000-seater Powerhouse stadium in 2030.

In a bid to achieve such on-pitch goals as swiftly as possible, Wagner hasn't been afraid to give manager Chris Davies ample resources and support, both in person and in the transfer market, as has been demonstrated across the two windows this season.

However, Davies hasn't had Birmingham sitting higher than fifth in the Championship all season, which came during the campaign's first month after an unbeaten start in their first three matches.

Despite finishing some 19 points ahead of Wrexham in League One last time out, the West Midlands outfit have fallen behind the Red Dragons in the standings this season, which will no doubt irk the club's hierarchy, with alarm bells recently raised over whether Davies will be granted the opportunity to kickstart a third season in the dugout at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.

Although Blues have ended the season with a run of much better performances and results, their play-off bid was effectively ended prior to the international break, leading to a fresh round of departure murmerings.

Given the club's ambition, plenty of avenues have been speculated, although there are some names that have escaped the minds of Blues fans as they are out of work.

Birmingham City eyeing ambitious Thomas Frank raid if Chris Davies is sacked

Indeed, it does, of course, remain to be seen if Davies will be relieved of his duties in the coming days and weeks, but Football League World exclusively revealed that Knighthead have set their sights on an ambitious move for former Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur boss, Thomas Frank, if that was to be the case.

The 52-year-old Dane has been out of work since February when he was dismissed in N17, but had previously gained strong admiration for his work in West London which saw the Bees follow up an eventual promotion through the Championship play-offs in 2020/21 with a plethora of strong Premier League finishes.

It has since been claimed that Blues chiefs have made contact with Frank, and that they are impressed by his data-driven approach, although they are said to be facing competition from both Celtic and Sunderland for his signature.

A few short years ago, the chances of Birmingham attracting a manager of Frank's experience and quality as a Championship side would have been laughed at, but the club's ambition means it cannot be ruled out whatsoever.

However, he could easily be joined on Wagner's shortlist by a compatriot who has earned plenty of plaudits on the continent.

Bo Henriksen would be an exciting left-field appointment from Birmingham City

That comes in the form of former Kidderminster Harriers forward, Bo Henriksen, who was most recently in charge of Bundesliga side, FSV Mainz 05.

The 51-year-old also worked at the likes of AC Horsens, FC Midtjylland and FC Zurich before making the move to the Mewa Arena, where he was in the dugout between February 2024 and December 2025.

During an intriguing managerial career to-date, Henriksen has won the Danish Cup with Midtjylland, and perhaps what would excite Blues fans even more so if he was to be appointed out of left-field in B9 was that, in his only full season with the German side, he was named Bundesliga Coach of the Season in 2024/25 as Mainz finished sixth, earning a place in the UEFA Conference League, subsequently reaching the quarter-final stage this term under the management of the Dane and his successor, Urs Fischer.

Henriksen has become known for utilising a high intensity style of play - one which could certainly get the best out of Blues' players, as well as exciting the supporters, who have shown their frustration towards Davies' possession-themed methods at times.

Ironically, it is also Davies' appointment two years ago which means a move for Henriksen wouldn't be the biggest shock, as the likes of Wagner eventually settled on the 41-year-old ahead of several experienced figures who were linked with the Birmingham job two years ago, even though his previous experience had only come as an assistant at clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Celtic.
