Sam Greenwood could be heading back to the Championship this summer

Blackburn Rovers are still looking for a new permanent manager to replace Michael O’Neill, but transfer planning at Ewood Park is seemingly on the move.

The Lancashire outfit made ten signings during the same period last year, as per transfermarkt, and will surely have to be busy again to try and avoid another relegation scrap next season.

Especially if the Venkys do decide to cash in on both Ryan Alebiosu and Todd Cantwell within the next few months, as is being reported by Football Insider.

It is understood that Rovers are open to selling the above pair in order to generate much‑needed funds for their own summer recruitment - but who could be signing number one?

According to Alan Nixon, via his Patreon, Blackburn have been monitoring ex-Leeds United attacking midfielder Sam Greenwood during his spell in Poland with Pogon Szczecin.

Greenwood left England last summer after consecutive Championship loan spells away from Leeds, which were at Middlesbrough and Preston North End respectively. He only scored one goal for Leeds in 37 matches.

At Preston, in 24/25, he scored seven times and managed three assists in 45 appearances, which suggests he remains capable of offering useful end-product in the right setup. He’s only managed three goals and two assists so far this season, with one more game of the Ekstraklasa to go.

Reports around the 24-year-old's move to Poland suggested the fee was roughly £3.4m, but that kind of outlay would surely be difficult for Rovers to justify. Nixon added that Blackburn are keeping tabs on him 'if the price is right'.

The key question is probably whether the Venkys would be willing to go anywhere near the fee Pogoń reportedly paid for him.

Also, you can imagine any recruitment strategy may shift depending on who is appointed next and how much influence they are given over signings.

Sam Greenwood could be 'tempted' with a move to Blackburn Rovers

From Blackburn’s point of view, Greenwood does make sense in terms of signing a versatile attacker. We’ve seen him operate up front in the Championship before, alongside attacking midfield, but he can also play out-wide according to FotMob.

Nixon, again in the same report, claimed that the former Lilywhites loanee 'may be tempted' with a move back to England. This means that Greenwood could be cutting his time in Poland short just one year into his three-year deal, and there's also an option for a further year.

In terms of potential wages, as per Capology estimates, the attacker was earning an estimated £30k-per-week on loan at Boro in 23/24, which made him the Teesside club's highest-paid player that season. Rovers surely won't be able to afford anywhere close to that, though.

Ultimately, if Pogon are open to a sale and Blackburn can negotiate a more realistic figure, this is the sort of deal that could be welcomed at Ewood.
