The East Lancashire outfit suffered a nightmare start to the 2025/26 campaign, losing their opening two league games alongside crashing out of the EFL Cup at the hands of League One Bradford City.

However, Valerien Ismael and Co. got their first points on the board with a 3-0 victory away at Hull City and will look to follow that up when they welcome Norwich City to Ewood Park this weekend.

Rovers have been on the receiving end of various transfer blows this summer, with key operators such as Lewis Travis, Callum Brittain and Tyrhys Dolan, among others, all exiting the club.

However, there have been positives, with Blackburn securing exciting talents in the form of Ryoya Morishita, Axel Henriksson, Dion De Neve and Lewis Miller.

According to journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon, Ismael’s side are aiming to add another prospect to that list in the form of Smit.

It is stated in the report that Rovers have turned their attention to the 22-year-old after having a bid rejected for Lorient forward Sambou Soumano.

Smit joined Go Ahead Eagles in 2024 and scored three goals in 22 league appearances last term.

His standout campaign thus far was in the Eerste Divisie with Cambuur, a season which saw him net 24 goals in all competitions.

Last year, Smit helped Go Ahead Eagles secure the KNVB Cup, which subsequently qualified the Eredivisie outfit for Europa League football.

The young striker has a contract until 2028 with his current employers, so Rovers will likely have to fork out a healthy fee for his services.

Blackburn Rovers will hope that Milan Smit can re-capture at Ewood Park

After such a dismal summer window that has seen so many familiar faces exit the club, Rovers’ supporters will be hoping they can end on a high with the signing of Smit.

Ismael has a huge task on his hands to push for the play-offs once more, due to the fact that so many experienced players have departed from his ranks, but new additions could provide a sense of excitement sorely missed around Ewood Park in recent times.

Despite struggling to score goals in the Eredivisie last term, Smit has previously proven to be a deadly operator in the Dutch second-tier, something the Blackburn faithful will be hoping translates over to English football.

If he can capture that form once more, his goals could be crucial for where Rovers’ fate lies after 46 games, which makes it all the more important that he hits the ground running if he does make the move to East Lancashire.
