Blackburn target Kwame Poku put in a dazzling display for Peterborough on 9th November, scoring a hattrick and getting one assist against Cambridge.

After reports emerged recently that expressed Blackburn Rovers' interest in signing Peterborough United winger Kwame Poku, his performance against Cambridge United will give fans all the more to shout about, should John Eustace swoop for dynamic Ghanaian in January.

A hat-trick and an assist in a 6-1 drubbing of Garry Monk;'s relegation-threatened side evidenced why Poku is becoming a highly sought after asset in the Championship.

The winger has been in electric form this season at London Road, and with the freedom afforded to Rovers manager John Eustace to build his own squad, Poku's most recent performance will be giving Eustace a lot to think about with regards to signing the player, should he be given the budget to do so.

Kwame Poku has been in scintillating form for Peterborough United

As reported by Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, Blackburn are showing an interest in swooping for Peterborough star Poku when the January transfer window opens.

Posh's number 11 has upped his levels this season, having netted 11 times and notched seven assists in League One last season, and could be exactly what Blackburn need to bolster their ranks and push for the play-offs.

His most recent performance against Cambridge showed exactly why the player is so highly valued to Darren Ferguson, but his time at United could naturally be coming to an end, with it looking increasingly likely that Poku has outgrown the club.

Peterborough have endured a tough start to their League One campaign. Pre-season hopes would have been to match their finish in the top six last season, even after losing key players such as Harrison Burrows, Ronnie Edwards and Josh Knight over the summer, but things have been much tougher and they find themselves in mid-table.

With 27 goals conceded in 15 games, Ferguson's defence have been putting on what can only be described as a horror show at times.

At the other end of the pitch, however, they have been at their best. 31 goals scored makes Peterborough the league's second-highest scorers behind Wycombe Wanderers, and their excellent scoring spree is due in no small part to the performances of Poku.

As the stats demonstrate, the 23-year-old Ghanaian has been largely unstoppable this season. With as many goal contributions as games played, defenders in League One just cannot handle his electric pace and impressive dribbling.

Most notable, however, is the quality of Poku's shooting. An Expected Goals on Target stat of 0.43 per 90 minutes indicates a very high standard of shots taken, especially when considering the player only averages 2.82 shots per game.

This shows that Poku is a clincial finisher, not least from the fact he has scored 10 goals from only 6.19 expected Goals on Target.

Peterborough's woes defensively have often been cancelled out by Poku's attacking prowess, and the Posh will be hoping that Blackburn do not act upon their initial interest in the forward.

John Eustace may have big Kwame Poku decision to make in January

In spite of an excellent start to the season which saw Blackburn go unbeaten for their first seven Championship games, Eustace's side have faltered recently.

Falling to ninth in the table, they have managed six wins from their 15 games so far and have accrued 22 points, although they did get back to winning ways this past weekend with a 3-1 victory on the road at Cardiff City.

Arguably, it is Blackburn's attack that has struggled the most so far, as they only average 1.27 goals per game, which is lower than a number of their promotion-chasing counterparts.

Signing Poku would give some much-needed competition to Andreas Weimann and Ryan Hedges at Ewood Park, especially the latter, who has only managed one goal and one assist in the Championship.

Blackburn still have a strong chance of making a push for the Championship play-offs, so a swoop for Poku would be ideal in January, before it is too late.

However, with the winger being one of League One's most prized assets, his signature may be difficult to secure, as you would imagine with less than six months remaining on his contract when the January transfer window reopens, there will be plenty of suitors in the second tier of English football - and perhaps across Europe - looking to strike a bargain deal for a fee or a pre-contract agreement if abroad.

With John Eustace already becoming widely popular among the Rovers faithful, signing Poku could go a long way to enhancing Blackburn's attack and cementing a favourable opinion of Eustace with supporters.

That of course though could come down to whether or not the Venky's hand Eustace a pot of cash to strengthen his side with - Rovers have not spent too much on fees in recent years but the additions of Todd Cantwell, Makhtar Gueye and Balazs Toth over the summer show that cash is there.

And yes, their Indian owners are maligned in sections of the fanbase, but if they allow Eustace to try and bring Poku to Lancashire, then there won't be too much complaining at that.
