Blackburn Rovers are in the battle against relegation from the Championship this season.

Michael O’Neill has been brought in as manager in recent weeks in a bid to overturn their poor results, and he has lifted them four points clear of the relegation zone with just seven games remaining.

The pressure will be on following the March international break to ensure that gap remains in place, with the club looking to avoid a first relegation since 2017.

Sheffield Wednesday have already officially been relegated, with the team on minus six points after 39 fixtures, meaning there are just two spots to be filled.

The likes of Oxford United, Leicester City, Portsmouth and West Brom are all also in the mix to join the Owls down in League One next season.

Blackburn have won just one of their last six games, but the gap to 22nd Leicester has grown in the last couple of weeks.

Blackburn Rovers eye free agent signing

It has been reported by Alan Nixon that Nathan Redmond is currently on trial at Ewood Park with a view to potentially joining the club.

The winger is currently without a team after his short stint at Hillsborough expired earlier this season.

It has been claimed that Rovers are considering a deal to sign the 32-year-old in a bid to aid their relegation battle.

Redmond departed Burnley last summer after making just two appearances as part of their second place finish in the Championship.

This led to him joining Sheffield Wednesday in November, but he left the Owls in January after his short-term contract was not renewed.

He played six times in Henrik Pedersen’s side, with each appearance coming as a substitute.

While the transfer window is currently closed, clubs are still able to sign free agents before the end of Thursday.

The free agent window will close on 26 March, meaning there is very little time left for Blackburn to decide on whether or not to sign Redmond.

O’Neill’s side are currently 19th in the Championship table, with just seven games remaining.

Rovers drew with second place Middlesbrough prior to the March international break, but their tally of 43 points is unlikely to keep them in the division as things stand.

Next up for Blackburn is a trip to face Birmingham City on 3 April in a 3pm kick-off.

Nathan Redmond addition couldn’t hurt Blackburn

Blackburn have the space for a free agent, so there is really no harm in bringing in somebody like Redmond for the final month or so of the campaign.

The winger has endured fitness issues this year, so it’s unlikely he’ll be thrown straight into the starting lineup.

But if he can even just add something in one game that can contribute to a result, then his signing could prove worthwhile, especially as he’s likely to only get a contract to the summer anyway.

It is at the point now where any kind of small edge could make a big difference at the end of the season, so there’s very little risk to bringing in Redmond if they feel he can add something to O’Neill’s squad.
