Sheffield United welcome Hull City to Bramall Lane on Saturday afternoon in the Sky Bet Championship, with both sides entering a crucial stage of the campaign with very different objectives.

The Blades head into the fixture searching for momentum as the season edges towards its conclusion. Chris Wilder’s side are currently enduring a difficult run, winless in their last six matches and having dropped ten points from winning positions during that spell. Their most recent outing, a 1-0 defeat away at Bristol City, summed up their frustrations in a game of contrasting halves that ultimately yielded nothing.

For Hull City, the picture is far more optimistic. Sitting comfortably in the top six, the Tigers remain firmly in the promotion conversation. Despite consecutive draws, they are just four points behind Ipswich Town and continue to show resilience in their push for a play-off place.

Chris Wilder on Coming Up Against Hull City

There will be no shortage of familiarity on the touchline and pitch at Bramall Lane. Wilder knows many within the Hull setup well and has been vocal in his admiration for the progress they’ve made this season.

“I think if you go on a statistical point of view, people will be scratching their head and thinking how are they up there?” he said in his pre-match press conference. “They’re up there through personality, they’re up there through character and we know half of them. They’re up there on merit and deservedly so because they’ve won games of football.

“They’ve found a way to deal with big moments. They’ve turned losses into draws and draws into wins. We’re the opposite as seen with the stats and they’re in that position deservedly so.”

Wilder also highlighted Hull’s adaptability and mental strength as key factors behind their success.

“Whatever the way they set up, whether they sit deep or press, they enjoy the suffering when their back is against the wall and they deal with that. When they’re on top, they put teams to bed. It’s pretty simplistic, isn’t it?”

Sheffield United Already Preparing For Pre-season And Beyond

While the immediate focus remains on Saturday’s clash, Wilder has already begun laying the groundwork for next season. Availability and consistency, he insists, will be key to Sheffield United’s approach moving forward.

“Availability will play a big part in our recruitment attitude next year,” he explained. “We need a settled side and players who can stay fit. It’s going to be a huge pre-season; possibly the biggest I’ve had here.

“Everything is planned out: every day, every session, all the games. The players will have clear instructions on what’s expected of them physically and mentally when they return.”

Could Kalvin Phillips Return to Bramall Lane Next Season?

Wilder also addressed speculation linking the club with a move for Kalvin Phillips, confirming Sheffield United’s interest while acknowledging competition for his signature.

“Definitely. He’ll have a lot of people after him,” Wilder said. “He’s a really good professional. He’s not played as much as he’d have liked, but he’s been around the place.

“I’ve spoken to him and told him that if we are an option, we’d love to be there for him, his agent and his parent club if that becomes a possibility. He ticks all the boxes in terms of personality and character.”

For now though, the focus remains heavily on Saturday afternoon’s kick-off at Bramall Lane where the Blades are hoping to end their current winless run of six.
