Bayer Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich expressed a mixture of pride and frustration following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Arsenal in the Champions League, a result that ultimately proved decisive despite a vastly improved performance from the German side.

Blaswich, who was one of Leverkusen’s standout performers on the night, began by highlighting the impact of the fans and the contrast to the first leg.

“We had amazing support today,” he said. “But it was a completely different game compared to the first leg.”

Leverkusen held their own for large parts of the first half, but Blaswich pointed to a key turning point before the break.

“It’s a shame we couldn’t go into half-time at 0-0. After that, it became extremely difficult.”

The goalkeeper also identified shortcomings in Leverkusen’s attacking play, suggesting they failed to properly stretch their opponents. “We should have moved the opponent around more. At times, we played too hastily, unfortunately.”

A moment of individual brilliance ultimately tilted the tie in Arsenal’s favor, something Blaswich acknowledged with visible frustration. “It’s a real shame that the first goal here in London came like that. It was a dream goal. After that, it was incredibly hard for us.”

Despite the disappointment, Blaswich emphasized that Leverkusen can take positives from their performance and exit the competition with dignity. “Even so, we can leave here with our heads held high,” he said.

With their European campaign over, the focus now shifts back to domestic objectives. “We still have our own goals nationally, and we want to approach those with full concentration now.”
