Last night’s defeat was such a painful one for Chelsea fans, and inevitably has led to blame being thrown around all over.
A lot of it has gone to Liam Rosenior, with Dom Smith’s piece for the Evening Standard today naming and shaming the ways in which the manager had messed up.
“[Rosenior’s] call to select Filip Jorgensen in goal over previous No. 1 Robert Sanchez was a decision that blew up in his face in Paris,” Smith wrote.
“Trying to bait the continent’s best pressing team onto an inexperienced goalkeeper was more of a dance with the devil than a well-judged risk.”
It wasn’t just the horrific pass straight to Bradley Barcola leading to the 3-2 goal which Jorgensen contributed. The 5th shot would have been saved by a better goalkeeper, and the general collapse in the team’s confidence and mentality began with the keeper’s error.
We said many times before the game – there was no reason to make this change now. Robert Sanchez had a bad game against Arsenal, but any of us who watched Chelsea last year knew that Jorgensen wasn’t going to bring anything better. We all just watched Rosenior walk into the same trap.
Rosenior was asked about the leak of team news in the press conference after the game, and had some interesting thoughts on the whole thing.
Rosenior was given the chance to make excuses about his team’s poor performance, but he very deliberately didn’t.
