Boca goalkeeper Leandro Brey suffered a heavy blow to the ribs and was forced off after 22 minutes, with Javier García replacing him during Tuesday’s Copa Libertadores match against Barcelona of Ecuador in Guayaquil.
Play unfolded in torrential rain on a badly cut-up surface, which hampered both sides. According to LaNumer12.com.ar, the injury followed a collision in the box that left Brey with sharp pain in his intercostal area, and after trying to continue he signalled for a change.
The setback rekindled unhappy memories for Boca against this team, reviving a sense of a goalkeeping jinx.
At La Bombonera against the same side, Boca previously lost another goalkeeper, Agustín Marchesín, who suffered a rupture of the cruciate ligament in his right knee, ruling him out for a lengthy spell.
For now, Boca’s coaching and medical staff will wait to assess Brey’s condition and run tests once conditions allow, hoping the rib trauma amounts to no more than a scare and does not hinder their push in the continental competition.
