Boca have revived talks to sign Santiago Ascacibar, a long-standing favourite of Juan Román Riquelme, according to LaNumer12.com.ar.
The Estudiantes midfielder has been pursued across several windows, with Boca convinced his style, energy and temperament fit the club. This time, the push is described as real and concrete.
Urgency stems from Rodrigo Battaglia’s injury, the midfielder could need surgery for insertional tendinopathy of the right Achilles tendon. The staff do not want to improvise in that area as they target league and Copa Libertadores contention.
Talks will not be simple, with Estudiantes seeking Brian Aguirre in part of the operation to let Ascacibar leave.
Aguirre, for whom Boca paid five million dollars, is viewed as a key bet, and Estudiantes see him boosting their attack. Riquelme and Marcelo Delgado must now weigh giving up Aguirre’s spark to strengthen midfield.
Time is short as the window nears its end, the board want a leap in quality and Ascacibar is the consensus choice. Fans await developments.
Separately, San Lorenzo have rejected Boca’s formal offer for Alexis Cuello and stepped away from talks. Riquelme has also withdrawn from the pursuit. The bid, led by Delgado, was three million dollars gross for 60% of the forward’s rights, with Almagro holding 40%, and San Lorenzo president Sergio Constantino was not convinced.
