Leeds United struggled for goals until last weekend, when they netted three past Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. While the win should boost their spirit ahead of hosting Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon, it would be a tricky test for Daniel Farke’s men, given the Cherries’ blistering Premier League form despite losing an array of key names during the summer window.

Bournemouth are currently fourth in the standings, but these two outfits produced some thrillers in the recent past. Their previous meeting at Elland Road finished 4-3 in favour of Leeds United back in November 2022; however, the Boscombe side have since made significant strides, particularly under the tutelage of Andoni Iraola.

Defence

Lucas Perri’s injury is a massive blow for the Whites, who are now relying on Karl Darlow between the sticks. The veteran Welshman should get the nod once more following a comprehensive display against Wolves.

Leeds bolstered their deep defence by snapping up Jaka Bijol and Sebastiaan Bornauw. But Farke has relied on Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk, as the pair drove their promotion from the heart of the backline. New signing Gabriel Gudmundsson has cemented his place on the left, and the fans now have a sigh of relief, with Jayden Bogle available for selection, overcoming a knock sustained in the previous gameweek.

Midfield

Skipper Ethan Ampadu dominated the midfield battle from the base, and his presence down the deep would be crucial against Bournemouth’s pressing and free-flowing football. Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev are also there from last season’s squad, but the summer recruits Sean Longstaff and Anton Stach have cemented their spots in the middle of the park.

Stach, in particular, instigated a comeback in the West Midlands with a stellar free-kick, followed by an assist for Noah Okafor late in the first half. Tanaka and Gruev might get involved at some stage as second-half substitutes.

Attack

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is back among goals, as a trademark header from the ex-Everton hitman earned the Peacocks an equaliser around the half-hour mark. He must spearhead the attack ahead of Joel Piroe and Lukas Nmecha, but the latter could be introduced as a ‘super sub’ as he has done so far early into the campaign.

Brendan Aaronson is expected to feature from the right, as Daniel James would only play some part if declared fit before the tie. Wilfried Gnonto is sidelined with a calf strain, but they have Okafor, who grabbed his first Leeds goal since completing a late transfer from AC Milan.
