Bolton Wanderers could add another goalkeeper to their ranks this summer, and Asmir Begovic is on their list

Bolton Wanderers are open to adding another goalkeeper to their ranks this summer, with Asmir Begovic on the club's radar after his exit from relegated Leicester City.

The Trotters ended a seven-year exile from the Championship this past May when they finally prevailed in the League One play-offs at the third time of asking, beating Stockport County 4-1 at Wembley.

Steven Schumacher's squad, following that win, has gotten a lot lighter in attacking areas, with the majority of their top performers at the top end of the pitch being on loan last season.

The likes of Amario Cozier-Duberry and Mason Burstow, who started that final, and Ibrahim Cissoko, who came off the bench and, before then, started both semi-final legs against Bradford City, were all on loan.

As was Johnny Kenny, who led the line in the run-in before injury curtailed his campaign, plus Rob Apter, Corey Blackett-Taylor and Marcus Forss, who battled injury and selection issues while at the club.

With just Kyliane Dong resembling the attacking arrivals this summer, it's evident where Bolton need additions ahead of the window's closure on September 1.

Therefore, it caused slight confusion and a little concern when Darren Witcoop reported that the Trotters, along with Sheffield United, were exploring a deal for Asmir Begovic, who recently became a free agent after leaving Leicester City this summer.

And, while the Bolton News have confirmed that Steven Schumacher's side are looking to add a senior goalkeeper to their ranks, it has been stressed that attacking players remain the priority ahead of the window closing on September 1.

Bolton already have four goalkeepers on the books. Jack Bonham is set to remain first-choice, with David Harrington, Nathan Broome and Luke Hutchinson currently in reserve. It's understood that at least one of those will be loaned out if a new signing is made.

Bonham evidently has the trust of Schumacher, who worked with him at Stoke City and subsequently brought him to the Toughsheet Stadium in January as part of a whole goalkeeper reset. He kept six clean sheets in 24 games in the second half of last season.

But with David Harrington as the current most senior backup option, at 26, whose EFL experience goes as high as one League One appearance with Fleetwood Town, having someone like Begovic, who has 256 Premier League bows under his belt, could be useful to have in reserve.

How Bolton Wanderers fans have reacted to Asmir Begovic confirmation

There are plenty of opinions floating around online from Bolton fans about the potential move for Begovic.

Most feel that Bonham may not be good enough to be their number one this season, but the majority of those also think that adding the Bosnian would be a waste of time, also.

"Bonham has done us good and deserves credit, but he just isn't good enough to be our number one in the Championship. He was probably one of the weaker players in League One. He has a mistake in him every game," one Bolton fan on X said.

"If it's Begovic then I'd just say don't bother," another said, while a third fan added, "Rather Bonham in net tbf."

One fan was open to the 32-year-old continuing his position as first-choice at the Toughsheet Stadium, but admitted that another "solid option" was needed if he couldn't make the step-up.

While it wasn't indicated if Begovic fit that bill, the 39-year-old may be seen as a little past his best, after conceding 21 in 11 league games for a relegated Leicester side last season.

Celtic frontman Kenny has been at the top of the wishlist for Bolton fans in the current transfer window ever since their play-off final success, and there's still hope that the Irishman can make a permanent return this summer.

The Bolton News went on to state that the preference for attacking reinforcements has seen them prioritise Kenny, who wasn't included in the squad for Celtic's opening Scottish Premiership matchup with Dundee on Monday evening.

Hoops boss Martin O'Neill is reportedly wanting to keep the majority of his players to provide adequate depth ahead of their Champions League qualification play-off against LASK later this month, but the Scottish giants are also on the hunt for players, too.
